Dr Brenda Kwambana-Adams awarded Wellcome International Intermediate Fellowship

13 Jan 2022

Congratulations to MPRU senior research fellow Dr Brenda Kwambana-Adams on being awarded the Wellcome International Intermediate Fellowship! This five-year fellowship will support Brenda’s pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) probe study based at the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Clinical Research Programme (MLW).

Brenda’s study will define the role of under-five year old children in transmitting Streptococcus pneumoniae to newborn infants within the same household. Brenda will also lead a clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of a PCV booster in reducing transmission from under-fives to same-household infants. If effective, the PCV booster given to older children will indirectly protect infants from acquiring and developing pneumococcal disease (cocooning). The findings from this project have a global health impact, by informing PCV vaccination strategies especially in high disease burden areas, as well as provide mechanistic understanding of pneumococcal transmission dynamics.

Congratulations again to Brenda!
