Dr Deus Thindwa passed his viva!

19 Dec 2022

Congratulations to MPRU (ex-)PhD student Deus Thindwa for passing his viva! Deus presented his research in a pre-viva talk on the 18th November and completed his viva on 24th November 2022. Deus's thesis work was on preventing pneumococcal disease among vulnerable adults in low- and middle-income settings in the era of routine infant pneumococcal vaccination. His findings will help inform public health policy on managing pneumococcal disease in vulnerable adults.

Deus was a highly prolific PhD student, publishing 5 first author publications on his PhD project, with a 6th manuscript as preprint. Leveraging his undergraduate education in computer science and mathematics, Deus used computational modeling to better understand the impact of pneumococcal vaccination and patterns of pneumococcal carriage, disease and transmission in vulnerable LMIC populations. His work demonstrated the utility of pneumococcal and other vaccinations in preventing disease and mortality in vulnerable adults.

Upon graduation, Deus is moving to Yale to join the Weinberger lab as a postdoctoral researcher, where he will investigate the epidemiology of RSV and pneumococcus, two major respiratory pathogens. We look forward to more important epidemiological discoveries from Deus!
