Paper on COVID-19 transmission dynamics in Kenya published in Science

14 Oct 2021

Congratulations to MPRU postdoctoral research fellow Dr John Ojal and colleagues on their recent publication in Science! In Kenya and other African countries, waves of COVID-19 incidence were not preceded by and therefore cannot be explained by relaxation of restrictions. Integrating PCR, serology and mobility data with a county-specific, two socioeconomic status (SES) group, SEIRS-type transmission model, the authors determined that differences in mobility patterns and contact rates in lower SES and higher SES groups explained the first two waves of COVID-19 incidence in Kenya. These findings support the recommendation that COVID-19 policy should be tailored to the needs and SARS-CoV-2 transmission patterns of specific regions.
