Paper on effects of LAIV on pneumococcal colonisation published in Lancet Microbe
Congratulations to MPRU PhD student Chikondi Peno and co-authors on their recent publication in Lancet Microbe! The paper describes results from a clinical trial aimed as assessing the impact of live attenuated influenzae vaccine (LAIV) on pneumococcal colonisation and density in Gambian children. Administration of LAIV led to modest increases in pneumococcal colonisation and bacterial density in this population. However, administration of LAIV did not increase pneumococcal carriage density beyond what is typically seen during asymptomatic viral infections. Therefore, wider rollout of LAIV in high pneumococccal carriage areas, such as the Gambia, should be encouraged to reduce influenza infections. Please read the full report on the publisher's site.
