Paper on pneumococcal carriage dynamics published in Frontiers in Pediatrics
Congratulations to MPRU postdoctoral research associate Dr Brenda Kwambana-Adams and colleagues on their recent publication in Frontiers in Pediatrics! Brenda led a longitudinal survey of pneumocccal carriage in infants in rural Gambia. Subsequent analyses revealed that the infants are rapidly colonized by Streptococcus pneumoniae after birth and that up to 40% of infants are colonized by two or more pneumococcal strains at the same time. The findings will inform epidemiology modeling and policies related to preventing pneumococcal disease and spread of antimicrobial resistance genes.
