Pneumococcal micro-invasion paper published in Nature Communications
Congratulations to Dr Caroline Weight and co-authors on their recent publication! The paper reports evidence of micro-invasion of epithelial cells by Streptococcus pneumoniae during asymptomatic carriage in healthy adults. The micro-invasion events, defined as epithelial surface adherence, micro-colony formation and internalisation of pneumococci, are postulated to enhance inflammatory and innate immune responses leading to clearance and/or transmission.
