Precision AMR Seed project award awarded to Akuzike Kalizang'oma
Congratulations to MPRU PhD student Akuzike Kalizang'oma for winning the Precision AMR Seed project award! This £15,000 seed funding will support Aku's research in developing a genomic approach to predict antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among Streptococcus mitis strains. S. mitis is postulated to be an important reservoir of AMR genes horizontally acquired by respiratory pathogens such as S. pneumoniae. This project will leverage S. mitis strains isolated from infective endocarditis patients over 18 years in the United Kingdom, as well as UCL's next-generation sequencing infrastructure, to predict beta-lactam susceptibility in these important commensal bacteria.
